Hereford

Hereford is a cathedral city, civil parish and the county town of Herefordshire in the West of England. It lies on the River Wye, around 16 miles east of the border with Wales, 24 miles southwest of Worcester, and 23 miles northwest of Gloucester. Hereford has a population of around 53,500 people, making it the largest settlement in the county.

Hereford House Prices & Redevelopment

The Hereford housing market has shown strong signs of improvement over the past year, but the latest figures point to a significant cooling of the local market in response to new legislation designed to restrict borrowing and reduce house buyer confidence in the face of imminent interest rate rises.

Having suffered a period of structural stagnation in terms of new construction projects for much of the 20th century, Hereford has been undergoing a period of regeneration since the turn of the millennium. The city centre is currently the focus of a massive redevelopment project which is scheduled for completion by 2027. Phase One of this project, which centres on the old cattle market, has recently been completed, having cost around £90million. According to Hereford Futures, who are managing the revitalisation of the site, detailed designs for the rejuvenation of the Buttermarket are also well under way.

The company are also managing a project to develop a 600 home Urban Village and provide a link road that will create a new east-west route across the city from the A49 north of the football ground to Commercial Road near Morrisons, thus alleviating the heavy traffic congestion problems which regularly choke up the town centre. With work having begun on another large development at The Oval in Belmont and several other new housing estates having been completed recenty, it is fair to say that Hereford is currently undergoing the biggest project in the West Midlands.

Hereford Tradition & History

Hereford is commonly believed to have derived its name from the combination of two Anglo-Saxon words: ‘Here’ meaning army, and ‘ford’ which was (and still remains) a place to cross a river. However, several Welsh historians dispute this assertion, claiming that Hereford is actually a corruption of the Welsh name, Henffordd, which means old road. In support of this they point to the close proximity of the original settlement to the Stretton, the Roman road from which the nearby village Stretton Sugwas takes its name. Having marked the border between Mercia and Wales, the former capital of the Saxon kingdom of West Mercia has been identified as a city since time immemorial.

Much of Hereford’s population is employed by the NHS and Herefordshire Council. A high percentage of people are also employed in local industry. Other major employers in the city include nickel alloy manufacturer Special Metals Wiggin, galvanised steel tower manufacturers Painter Brothers, Cargill Meats Europe (formerly Sun Valley) who manufacturer and supply food products for retailers. The brewing and producing of beers and ciders also adds significantly to the local economy. Bulmers, Weston’s Cider, Spinning Dog Brewery and Wye Valley are the largest brewers in the area. Hereford is a global producer of cider due to the large amount of orchards located in the area. Agriculture is still very important to the local economy, with the Hereford Breed of cattle being internationally renowned.
