Lying on the southern edge of the Mendip hills, Wells is a cathedral city in Somerset with a population of just over ten thousand. A small Roman settlement grew up around the wells and subsequently expanded under Saxon rule. After King Ine of Wessex founded a minster church at the settlement in 704 CE, the area became a centre of the cloth trade.
