Wells House Prices

Average house prices in Wells are up just 1.23% since last year, according to the Zoopla house price index. There are many ongoing and sometimes heated debates in Wells regarding decisions based on whether or not to exploit greenfield sites in order to increase housing stock. Though there is not a great deal of supply in terms of new stock coming onto the market, demand from house buyers in Wells is not currently significant enough to provide considerable upward pressure on house prices.

Wells Culture & Attractions

Having once been choked with congestion, Wells town centre’s traffic problems were relieved by the construction of the A39/A371. Wells has since returned to being a quiet market city. Wells lies close to Bath, Stonehenge, Glastonbury, Wookey Hole, the Mendip Hills, the Somerset Levels and the Somerset close. Its proximity to all these attractions, combined with its rich historical and architectural landscape has, unsurprisingly, made Wells a popular tourist attraction.

The focal point of the city, the awe-inspiring 12th century cathedral is enclosed by a walled precinct, the Liberty of St Andrew, which contains the cathedral itself, the Bishop’s Palace, Vicar’s Close and the homes of the members of the clergy who serve the cathedral. The Liberty of St Andrew has many entrances, including the Penniless Porch, The Bishop’s Eye and Brown’s Gatehouse all of which were constructed circa 1450.

Wells has been a city of ecclesiastical importance for centuries and parts of Wells Cathedral date from as far back as the tenth century. Its fan vaulted ceilings, Lady Chapel and windows, and the scissor arches that support the central tower all number among the religious architectural wonders of the Medieval world. The west front of Wells Cathedral is perhaps its most famous feature and, with over 300 original statues, it is said to be the finest collection of statuary in Europe.

Wells Cathedral clock is extremely famous for its 24 hr astronomical dial and set of jousting knights that perform every quarter hour. The cathedral is also famous for possessing the heaviest ring of ten bells in the world.

The bishops of the Diocese of Bath and Wells have resided at the Bishop’s Palace for over 800 years. The cathedral also benefits from 14 acres of gardens.

The Vicars’ Close is the oldest residential street in Europe. The Church of St Cuthbert is another famous building in Wells, and one which tourists often mistake for the cathedral. Constructed in the 13th Century, the Early English building was heavily altered during the Perpendicular period.

Wells’ singularly beautiful architecture has made it a popular set for several notable films and television shows. Wells served as the best village in the country for the film Hot Fuzz and the cathedral provided an interior setting for the 2013 movie Jack the Giant Slayer.

Wells Tradition & History

Lying on the southern edge of the Mendip hills, Wells is a cathedral city in Somerset with a population of just over ten thousand. Often referred to as England’s smallest city, Wells derives its name from the three wells dedicated to St Andrew which are located in the market and within the grounds of the Bishop’s Palace and Cathedral.

A small Roman settlement grew up around the wells and subsequently expanded under Saxon rule. After King Ine of Wessex founded a minster church at the settlement in 704 CE, the area became a centre of the cloth trade. Later, in the 17th century, Wells became embroiled in both the Civil War and the Monmouth Rebellion.
